JayKim ROK–US Institute Chairman

Since gaining independence after World War II, the Republic of Korea has achieved remarkable political democratization and economic growth—an extraordinary feat for a nation emerging from colonial rule. Today, Korea stands among the world's top 20 advanced economies as a proud member of the G20. Our journey has become a role model for many developing countries around the world, who look to Korea with admiration.

As politics advance, better policies are created, and the political arena takes on a guiding role, which in turn drives economic development. A prime example of this interdependence is seen in the past when tensions between the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S. delayed the passage of the national budget, bringing economic activity to a near halt. This highlights the inseparable relationship between politics and the economy.

A mature political system is thus essential for sustainable economic development, and strong, inclusive growth policies are a necessary part of that process.

Over half a century ago, I came to the United States as a student, enduring many hardships before becoming a city councilman, then mayor, and eventually making history as the first Korean American elected to the United States Congress. Drawing on my long experience in American society and legislative work, I am now committed to dedicating my remaining energy to the political and economic advancement of my homeland.

To that end, the JayKim ROK-US Institute will remain strictly neutral and committed to genuine democratic progress and economic revitalization. We will promote education and facilitate private exchanges between Korea and the United States for the benefit of the people, with the people as the true sovereign.

I hope that responsible and freedom-loving intellectuals will join forces with the JayKim ROK-US Institute to help bring about a peaceful democratic unification of Korea. I also ask for your continued encouragement and support from all those who love and care for our nation.
